It’s wonderful how much of this game she is not playing.

One of the reasons why I actually love Kristen Stewart is that she doesn’t give into the moments when women try to be pit against each other or obey the conventions of what female celebrities are expected to care about. And that’s one of the reasons why people are so put off by her personality, which makes me love her more.

Things weren’t supposed to go this way. Ever since that awful day on Virmire it’s the first thought when I wake up every morning, and the last before I sleep. Hell, since Eden Prime. Maybe because—somehow—no one else seems willing to blame me for either.

They say I lived because I was “strong,” “intelligent,” “cunning…” To be honest, I don’t argue too much when they say it, either. But Shepard would have been smarter, more intelligent, more cunning—if she hadn’t eaten that bullet.

I’ll repeat what I said on Twitter:

1. Fanfiction has always been about the option to use use all the tools, including sexuality, to tell story. Therefore, Amazon is not groking the marketplace of readers or creators.

2. The contractual terms are shit for writers. Traditional professional writers would be strongly advised against signing a contract of this nature. Is your fannish work worth less? Should it be?

3. To what degree does this suggest that the fanfiction can only be legitimized through the eradication of fan culture’s gift economy?

4. Fanfiction has significantly changed our media culture. This project isn’t just capitalizing on it, but an attempt to shape it. Is this a feedback loop in action or an attempt to stop the catalyst that is our work?

5. I am the first person to say creativity should be compensated and fan work should not be considered some pale imitation of “real” story telling as it’s essentially an ancient tradition. But this plan from Amazon is a hot mess.

I agree with all of this, especially no. 1 as I am a firm believer that sexuality plays an enormously important role in fiction. It can be such a powerful tool in showing new elements of characters. And logistically? I cannot see how it would be any fun to write fanfiction while aware that there is the possibility it may be deemed too “sexual” for their specific regulations. In what kindle world is curbing my writing to certain rules, especially around sexuality, helpful to my creative process? Will those rules, in fact, hinder that creative process?

I am also wary that lgbt subject matter could fall into that “sexuality” category.

its so rude to hand out somebodys contact info without consent. :[ can you tell the person that youre sorry but you arent taking new clients at the moment? its a professional thing to say and no one should think badly of you for that.

That is a good phrasing, yes, and I may still look at it. I told the dude (a week ago) that i’d take a look at what he wants and get back with some ideas…and a good deal of it is a bit out of my league and more coding than web design, so I may just end up doing him a solid and helping him identify what he actually needs (coder vs designer, etc) and then passing on the actual work.

Boundaries seem to be kind of an open thing with her. :/ I don’t tend to mind it a lot of the time, but then there’s instances like this where I’m just left going “….?” It’ll pass, I’ll just be a bit…manic for a while.

I think I’m somewhat ticked off at my boss.

About a week ago, without bothering to inform or ask me, she gave my name and number to a person she knows that was looking for someone to redo his website. That’s where that post about being uncomfortable with money talk came from, btw.

Thing is…I am not in a headspace for extra work. i am in the middle of a complicated moving situation (that the boss knows about), and beyond that I’ve just been…I don’t know. I can’t explain it. I can’t concentrate for shit, I let things fall by the wayside because no matter how much I WANT to do them the energy just isn’t there, things that used to be fun as hell are now a complete chore because I don’t feel like I’m any good at them anyway and what’s the point…To clarify, i don’t think I’m depressed because I can still feel emotion and be happy about things in the moment. I don’t know what to call this. Whiny person syndrome? Nothings wrong with me but I want to believe there is? christ, i don’t know.

Point is, I’m making it by with just my day job and right now I am content with that. That is exactly the most amount of pressure I can deal with.

But the boss doesn’t understand people like this, point blank. I’ve mentioned, after having it drug out of me, money issues in the past (ie, dealing with surprise bills dropped on my head out of no where) and so she’s under the impression that recommending me to someone is this huge gift and why on earth *wouldn’t* i want the work. There is no way for me to turn this down without making her look bad, or damaging her opinion of me.

And I fucking hate being put in this position.
